For as long as I can remember, I've been a fan of The Algorithm™. It was a bit of a bit, but I'd nag my friends to all give in to The Algorithm™ and let it choose your content and make decisions for you. Regardless, my consistent belief was that The Algorithm™ knows you best. No matter what, The Algorithm™ would bring to light revealed preference, no matter how much you tried denying it. The 13 minutes you spent scrolling through @shitpost_2049_rot-brain on Reels, when you were given the option to look at the conventionally attractive mid-20s traveller influencer dumping their Iceland trip content, was a deliberate action by you, and The Algorithm™ recognizes this. You "failed" the A/B test, and you're now bucketed into the "Shitpost-lovers_NA-West" feature embedding, or SQL Table, or whichever.
There's been a certain vibe-shift in The Algorithm™, which I first caught wind of in 2020, where I felt like there'd been a loss of connection between me, my soul, and The Algorithm™. Over the years, it started to feel less so of "This is for you", and more of "This will be for you". Instead of using my revealed preference via my content view time and interactions, there was a strong shift to forcefed content, meant to mold my worldview and emotions.
I don't know how yet to combat this effectively. The safest option is to only view content from my following, but this deeply reduces the potential of discovery. Curiosity kills the cat. I don't believe I'm the only one who feels this way, and I'd love to see more implementation of a more open and customizable "for you" feed, that is truly, for you.
